About the Album

BEATLESS

Every once in a while a band comes along that seems somehow strangely familiar.

Not because you’ve heard them before—but because you somehow remember hearing them in another lifetime, or because I used a gag as a band name.

The Beatless arrived one rainy evening at Kay GOD carrying battered guitar cases, a harmonica, and exactly one map of Bardotown, which turned out to be upside down. They explained that they had crossed the Atlantic in search of Norton Street after hearing mysterious late-night broadcasts that seemed to originate from nowhere on Earth and everywhere else.

Their music blends the bright energy of the early "Mersey Beat" sound with the curious logic of the Norton Street universe, where ordinary conversations drift effortlessly into impossible realities. Every song sounds as though it could have been played in a Liverpool cellar pub one night and broadcast from the Magic Theater the next.

The Beatless specialize in ringing guitars, close vocal harmonies, irresistible rhythms, and melodies that somehow make even the most bewildering metaphysical questions feel perfectly natural. Around here, it’s considered completely normal to dance while contemplating parallel universes.

Nobody seems entirely certain who the members of The Beatless really are. They claim to have grown up in Liverpool, but their passports list Bardotown as their permanent residence. Their stage manager insists they never travel by airplane, preferring instead to arrive by improbable coincidence.

As always, KGOD — The Station That Makes It was delighted to bring them into Studio A, where vacuum tubes glowed warmly, the ON AIR light came alive, and another chapter of Norton Street became music.

Turn up the volume, imagine the smell of warm tube amplifiers and fresh rain on London pavement, and enjoy a "Mersey Beat" journey through the wonderfully impossible world of Norton Street.

Recorded for Kay GOD Radio.

Broadcasting from somewhere between Liverpool … Bardotown … and the place where the two unexpectedly become the same street.

Listening

The Norton Street Beatless folder contains the complete selection of "Beatless" mp3s of Norton Street audio programs. Each MP3 is identified by its Act and Scene designation (for example, Norton A2S3). You may enjoy the album in either of two ways:

Listen to a Single Program

  • Open the folder.
  • Double-click any MP3 file.

Listen to the Entire Collection

  • Open the folder.
  • Select all of the MP3 files.
  • Start playback using your preferred music player. The player should present the programs in their existing order.
  • If your player offers a Play Folder, Play All, or Shuffle option, select Play Folder or Play All if you wish to hear the programs in sequence. Avoid Shuffle if you want the dramatic order preserved.

We recommend listening to the complete collection at least once in sequence before exploring individual programs.

Don’t use the shuffle option the first time, if at all. They’re best heard in sequence. Welcome to Norton Street...
